University of Texas at AustinThis study reports on the experiences of 174 men in the nursing profession across theUnited States. Participants completed online measures of gender role consict, socialsupport, gender-related work barriers, and work and life satisfaction. Overall, menappeared well adjusted and content in their roles and lives. Variables predictive ofcareer and life satisfaction included perceptions of gender-related work barriers, con-sict between work and family, social support from signiÞcant others, conÞdence in jobskills, and comfort in physical and emotional expression with other men. The impli-cations of these Þndings for recruiting and retaining men into the nursing professionand suggestions for further research are discussed.Keywords: men in nursing, non-traditional work roles, masculinity
