The purpose of this paper is to briefly summarize the literature available, indicate the more common types of compositions of glass used in Egypt, Rome, the Near East, and China together with the evidence they provide of the raw materials and the working properties of the glass, and to suggest nondestructive tests that could rapidly increase the useful information available.
