Interdisciplinary collaboration and project management were compared for academic interdisciplinary research projects operating under the aegis of permanent institutes, adaptive institutes, and inde pendent projects. The findings reported here, from a nationwide sample of interdisciplinary research projects, do not support the argument that institutes necessarily increase cross-disciplinary collaboration or the management of interdisciplinary research.
