Two forms of brief individual psychotherapy for caregivers of demented relatives were compared through the use of four outcome measures. A therapeutic approach in which the therapist encouraged expression of painful emotion in addition to helping the caregiver develop problem-solving approaches. A reduction in psychiatric symptomatology and major positive changes in the caregiver-relative relationship occurred for those caregivers who received the former approach.
