Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI), was contracted through the National Preservation Institute (NPI) to conduct a Phase I archaeological survey of approximately 55 acres of previously unexamined land and undertake NRHP evaluation of four buildings on Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi. This work utilized funding from NPI’s Cooperative Agreement No. HQ00342320009 with the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program, and was intended to assist individual installations with identifying and evaluating historic properties on DoD lands to aid the Cultural Resource Manager in their fulfillment of Section 110 obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act. The architectural survey was conducted on 21 May 2025 by a two-person field crew. Four buildings—Buildings 404, 701, 902 and 1204—were recorded and Mississippi Historic Resource Inventory forms completed for each. Buildings 701 and 902 are recommended eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion C as prime examples of the Brutalism style of architecture. The other two buildings were not considered eligible for the NRHP. Archaeological survey was conducted from 16 to 20 June 2026 by a four-person field crew. During the permitting process to conduct excavations, a portion of the Naval Reserve Park Marina survey (originally 21.3 ac) was reduced to 6 ac outside of the Primary Surface Zone to avoid delays due to review required for an Airfield Zone permit. A total of 165 shovel tests were excavated. Only one was positive for cultural material. No archaeological sites were encountered.
