Vocational training refers to a process whereby workers acquire knowledge and skills – whether through basic training, further training or retraining – through a range of dedicated schemes and practices. Whilst a broad distinction can be drawn between initial training – which mainly concerns young men and women with a basic education but who have not yet entered the labour market – and continuing or lifelong training – intended for those already in employment – this distinction must be viewed with considerable nuance, as it reflects only a recent reality, found primarily in industrialised countries.
