The Care-Ethic Capture of Narrative: Vulnerability, Moral Permission, and the Reallocation of Agency in Contemporary Cultural Production Civilization Physics - Series: Narrative Sovereignty / Care and Feedback Collapse This article develops a theory of care-ethic narrative capture in contemporary cultural production. It argues that representation, trauma-centered explanation, therapeutic language, weakened protagonists, evasive moral closure, and reward displacement often appear as separate creative problems, but can be generated by one deeper mechanism: care becoming a prior allocator of narrative permission. Under capture, vulnerability, protected identity, emotional safety, relational preservation, and anticipated harm begin assigning credibility, sympathy, agency, mercy, authority, and reward before story causality has earned those permissions. The central claim is that care has a legitimate moral domain, but cannot own the narrative frame. Care can reveal suffering, dependence, cost, vulnerability, and the human consequences of power. Capture begins when care acquires jurisdiction over truth, causality, responsibility, judgment, desire, closure, and reward. The article therefore proposes narrative sovereignty: world reality, character position, desire, knowledge, capacity, choice, action, consequence, judgment, and reward must remain causally ordered. The article develops this argument through several linked mechanisms: Narrative permission names the story-conferred right to know, act, judge, use force, fail, be forgiven, desire, possess, receive reward, and close conflict. Permission asymmetry occurs when morally equivalent conduct receives different narrative interpretation because characters occupy different protected or threatening positions. Protected agency allows a character to exercise significant causal power while remaining insulated from full responsibility for consequence. Positive Agency Allocation Drift concentrates discovery, competence, moral courage, decisive intervention, preservation, and recognition in identities already marked as vulnerable or corrective. Audience-contract displacement occurs when a story recruits genre desire, then replaces the promised reward with harm-minimizing reassurance or moral correction. Asymmetric feedback ecology explains why capture persists: institutional approval is immediate and attributable, while audience correction is delayed, distributed, and hard to diagnose. This article reframes narrative bias as a problem of permission rather than representation count alone. A work may contain many women while narrowing female agency, many male heroes while hollowing ordinary male social life, complex villains while refusing judgment, and rich care language while denying characters full responsibility. The restoration is structural: let world reality generate position, position shape knowledge and capacity, desire produce choice, action enter consequence, consequence support judgment, and judgment authorize mercy, punishment, or reward.
