The article discusses the main features of the scientific functional style of speech and its linguistic and didactic foundations as an academic discipline. A retrospective analysis of theoretical literature and textbooks shows that for several decades (from the 1960s to the 1990s), approaches to teaching foreign students the scientific style of speech changed, which was expressed in the search for the most effective ways to present educational material, in minimizing it and distributing it by concentration. The idea of the minimum unit of learning also changed - from words, phrases to a sentence, and then to the text. The article presents the main characteristics of the educational and scientific text as the main unit of learning, and concludes that it is necessary to use the text in educational work on all types of speech activity. Exercises on the formation of skills for creating secondary scientific texts based on compression techniques are proposed.
