The article is devoted to the problem of teaching the scientific style of speech, which was introduced into the education of foreigners of the preparatory department of the I. I. Mechnikov ONU. The introduction of this discipline was aimed at expanding the linguistic horizons of the foreign student in order to better prepare him for the linguistic environment and student life at the faculty. The issue of teaching the scientific style has not yet been finally resolved, therefore it remains relevant for polemics and active discussion. The article draws attention to the important linguistic means of the scientific style: mastery of scientific vocabulary, correct use of syntactic constructions, logical construction of sentences in the text, successful use of quotes. Understanding scientificity is a complex and long path of searching for the truth, putting forward ideas, rethinking previous theories and reflecting on one’s own ideas, assumptions or beliefs. The variety of examples of scientific style depends on the inclinations of students to a particular field of knowledge — according to their preferences, abilities, pragmatic choice, family influence or requests of the native country regarding the training of certain specialists. One of the important factors of the scientific style of speech — the correctness of word usage — contributes to the awareness of the importance of the subtleties of logical construction of sentences in the text, which is based on the linguistic laws of the structure of both small and large syntactic units. The use of various forms of teaching has prospects for the further work of foreigners on coursework, diploma and dissertation works. The scientific style of speech, despite its complexity, polemic and debatable nature, occupies an important place in the complex of the entire educational process that a foreign student undergoes in the preparatory period before entering a higher education institution. The choice of a future student, his determination with the profile of study and future profession is of great importance. Therefore, the scientific style of speech can be oriented towards economic, philological, chemical-medical, physical-mathematical or other educational profile. For this, specialists working with foreigners create and develop significant language material in order to avoid or reconcile various methodological conflicts both in teaching and in learning. It is necessary to introduce teaching and methodically develop programs on the scientific style of speech for foreigners in order to achieve an important goal – high-quality teaching of the Ukrainian language as a foreign language.
