The article shows that since folklore is a part of traditional artistic culture, it would be natural to assume that the category of artistry acts as a leading one for it. However, to say only this means to narrow the content of folklore to its ability to reflect reality within the boundaries of art. In the situation of updating traditional values, the author turns to folklore as a cultural phenomenon and considers its features: traditionality, oral functioning, variability, collective authorship, formulaicity, artistry, and the ability to convey the peculiarities of the vision of the world by its creators and embody the leading meanings of life and goal-setting. The material of the article is of interest within the framework of disciplines related to traditional and folk art.
