K-Culture Policies and Challenges in the Dance Community

The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges necessary for the development of dance during the flourishing era of Korean culture, known as the K-Culture era. To this end, I examined K-Culture policies, analyzed the impact of these policies on the dance and dance community.The study found that the term K-Culture used in policy refers not to culture produced in Korea, but to culture that appropriately expresses Korean characteristics. It is used as a strategic policy term to expand the Korean Wave (Hallyu). To promote this K-Culture, the government is establishing and implementing growth-oriented and neo-nationalistic policies. As a result of these K-Culture policies, the dance art is affected by the distinction between what is K-Culture and what is not, a trend towards uniformity in the style of works, and an expansion of the social role of dance.Therefore, the challenges that the dance community must strive to accomplish are: first, solidarity within the dance community for the healthy development of dance art ecosystem; second, efforts to diversify the themes, styles, and experimentation in dance art; third, raising awareness about the recording of dance and its utilization; and fourth, the practical development of dance audiences.
