Against the background of the new era, higher education aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with both solid professional competence and profound sense of patriotism and responsibility for the country. As a crucial professional basic course for civil engineering majors in application-oriented undergraduate colleges and universities, “Structural Mechanics” is characterized by strong theoretical nature, high difficulty and low learning initiative of students. Therefore, it is particularly important to implement ideological and political education in the curriculum to enhance students’ cognitive understanding of the course and guide them to develop a positive learning attitude. This paper explores and practices the ideological and political education model of “Structural Mechanics” from the aspects of curriculum objectives, ideological and political elements in the curriculum, education schemes, teaching design methods and assessment mechanisms. It aims to enhance students’ sense of responsibility and patriotism, help them establish a correct outlook on life and values, so as to create an innovative pattern of undergraduate teaching of “Structural Mechanics”, form a teaching system focusing on the cultivation of applied talents’ practical abilities, improve the teaching quality of “Structural Mechanics”, and cultivate a new generation of college students who meet the requirements of society.
