Site visit. Trawls of HER, NHLE, the Historic England Archive, and surviving cartographic resources, along with other documentary sources (e.g. British Newspaper Archive, the census etc). There is strong evidence for the occurrence of Romano-British and Medieval archaeology on the Project Site, particularly south of the existing church and to a lesser extent north of the principal elevation. It is possible that part of the archaeology relates to the putative Calne Castle, the existence of which has always been debatable. Demolition of the Chapel would cause harm to the setting of nearby heritage assets, but that this would be less than substantial. Substantial harm would occur to Calne Baptist Church through its demolition.
