This article investigates some of the issues facing mature tourist destinations. It outlines research carried out into the problems facing three island destinations in the Baltic: Bornholm, an island belonging to Denmark; Gotland, belonging to Sweden; and the Åland Islands which are an autonomous province of Finland. It pinpoints the need for mature destinations to take a more co-ordinated and professional approach to the tourism industry founded on improved market research, training and marketing. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
