Dunhuang Grottoes murals with rich cultural-artistic value are facing various types of deterioration. Digital restoration is increasingly important for culture heritage preservation due to its non-contact and reversible characteristics. This systematic review discusses the development of mural restoration technologies. It explores strengths and limitations of algorithm-based image processing, deep neural networks, and multimodal fusion techniques in tackling different kinds of deterioration. Meanwhile, a novel multidimensional cultural compensation mechanism is proposed, embedding profound cultural meaning through multimodal fusion. Synergistic technology integration strategies are established to meet diverse conservation demands. Restoration must prioritize culture-driven principles, requiring enhanced scheme adaptability, improved digital restoration standards, and assured long-term preservation with cultural continuity.
