The Estonian Ministry of Education and Research (2023, 2024) has introduced electronic student assessments. At the same time, digital tools are seldom used in schools (Uusen, Puksand 2019). This study is based on the problem that writing is taught on paper, while writing is assessed on the computer. The aim of the study is to compare 5th-grade studentsâ paper-based and computer-based written texts to find out whether and how the two types differ. In order to achieve the objective, two writing tasks were set where students had to write a text of about 100 words based on a series of six pictures. The texts were written by 31 students from two 5th-grade classes. All students wrote one text on the computer and another one on paper. A total of 62 texts were received for analysis. The findings showed that computer-based texts were longer despite the word limit and were also more complex. However, vocabulary range and lexical density were similar across both mediums. On average, students made more errors on the computer, especially in punctuation, letter orthography, form modification, and typos. Boys made more errors than girls in both formats. Consequently, since students primarily use computers for communication rather than structured schoolwork, computer-based assessments may not accurately reflect their true academic writing skills. To ensure fair evaluation, students must be taught to type and format text properly. Tehnika kiire areng on toonud innovaatilisi muutusi haridus süsteemi, mistõttu Haridus ja teadusministeerium (2023) on ka riikliku õpitulemuste välishindamise teinud elektrooniliseks. Samas kasutatakse digivahendeid koolis pigem vähe (Puksand, uusen 2020).
