Research demonstrates the preparation of coal gangue lightweight aggregate, revealing improved compressive strength and water retention capacity.
The bulk accumulation of coal gangue causes land occupation and environmental pollution. In this paper, a coal gangue lightweight aggregate (CG-LWA) is prepared utilizing coal gangue and small amount of fly ash. The effects of sintering regime, type, and dosage of pore-forming agents (PA) on the aggregate properties are studied. The results showed that calcination temperature has the greatest impact on the performance of CG-LWA. At the calcination temperature of 1180 °C, CG-LWA reaches the best comprehensive performance of bulk density of 980 kg/m3, apparent density of 2120 kg/m3, water absorption of 15%, and cylinder compressive strength of 12.1 MPa. Microstructure investigation shows that the source of intensity in CG-LWA are mullite, suolunite, and cristobalite. As compared with shale lightweight aggregate (SLWA), CG-LWA shows higher cylinder compressive strength, better water retention capacity, and can more effectively maintain the humidity of the cement paste.
