Citrus flavonoids improve CFTR activity and reduce inflammation in cystic fibrosis, suggesting new treatment avenues.
Citrus flavonoids offer large potential for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Aimed at reinvigurating fundamental and applied research on citrus flavonoids for the treatment of mucoviscidosis, this study first identifies the main findings concerning their use since the early research reports in the late 1990s showing substantial activity of selected citrus flavonoids as CFTR activators. The thesis of this work is that citrus flavonoids hold sigificant potential for developing a multi-target treatment of cystic fibrosis combining in a single treatment antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, CFTR stimulation and immunomodulatory properties, as required by a genetic disease eventually causing chronic lung inflammation and bacterial infection reinforcing each other.
