Framework evaluates transient events and design recommendations for wastewater pump stations, highlighting economic integration with existing utilities.
This paper presents a framework for evaluating transient events in the design of new or retrofitted wastewater pump stations (WWPSs) using new and existing force mains. The paper describes the initial condition assessment of existing utilities, transient events modeling, and final design recommendations. Data from the Case Study of Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County's WWPSs (Pump Station 1 and Pump Station 2) illustrate the relative effectiveness of these recommendations. The focus is on economically utilizing existing system components and integrating new designs to work seamlessly with them. Recommendations for mitigating transient impacts at both WWPSs and throughout the force mains are discussed. Common failure conditions are also discussed to provide context and effective solutions.
