New complexes demonstrated antimicrobial activity and adsorption characteristics in bentonite, suggesting innovative applications in material science.
New complexes were prepared by reacting metal ions Pt(IV), Hg(II) and Zn(II) with the Schiff base LH, (E)-3-hydroxy-4-((pyridin-3-ylmethylene)amino) naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid. The new Schiff base and the prepared complexes were characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). The new Schiff base acts as a bidentate ligand, coordinating with the metal ions through the nitrogen atom of the azomethine group and the deprotonated phenolic oxygen atom. Spectroscopic and analytical measurements revealed that the geometry of the Hg(II) and Zn(II) is tetrahedral geometry and for the pt(II) is octahedral. The ligand and its complexes were tested for their antimicrobial activities, and the isothermal adsorption of the platinum complex was studied.
