Comparative analysis reveals tensile strength differences in 3D printing polymers, suggesting filament options may enhance sustainability.
In the current scenario of the popularization of additive manufacturing methods, this article seeks to understand aspects of the environmental sustainability of polymers commonly used in filament and resin 3D printing processes. Two polymeric materials derived from petroleum and two of plant origin were researched and subjected to tensile tests in order to compare their performance in terms of mechanical strength, which has a direct impact on the useful life of the product, and how this aspect contributes to sustainability in 3D printing. The results showed that the ABS filament performed better in the tests. Finally, it is suggested that filament printing offers more possibilities for improving mechanical strength, as it has a variety of material deposition parameters that can influence this aspect.
