Research shows a significant relationship between socio-economic characteristics and community understanding of river protection efforts in Wae Batu Merah.
The development of dense settlements at the Wae Batu Merah riverbank in Ambon City has created permanent concrete barriers on the left and right of the river, resulting in a significant decrease in the river protection area’s function. The space available along the riverbank area is essential for protection. This research analyzes the relationship between community understanding and enthusiastic attitude toward the protection process and efforts to preserve the Wae Batu Merah riverbank. The results of Pearson Chi-square between socio-economic characteristics with the level of understanding and enthusiastic attitude of settler communities regarding the function of protection and efforts to preserve the riverbank areas show that the value of Pearson Chi-square is greater than Chi-square table Asympton Significance (2-sided) at α 0.05. These results show a significant relationship between socio-economic characteristics, the level of understanding and enthusiastic attitude, and efforts to preserve the riverbank area of the Wae Batu Merah Watershed in Ambon City.
