Experimental method demonstrates effective hydrogen saturation of E110 zirconium alloys, suggesting optimal conditions for industrial applications.
A plant for gas-phase hydrogenation of zirconium alloys using a non-explosive mixture of Ar + 8% wt. H2 in the presence of a getter - iodide zirconium - has been developed. Based on the results of the first experiments on hydrogenation of unirradiated alloy E110 (Zr-1Nb) in this plant, the temperature - time dependences of the amount of dissolved hydrogen were determined. The temperature 400 °C was chosen as optimal for hydrogenation to the required concentrations, which is close enough to the operating temperature of zirconium alloy products. By adjusting the holding time from 15 to 90 min, samples with a hydrogen content of 20-600 ppm were obtained in the absence of surface oxidation.
