Experimental studies reveal that pulse cooling improves surface roughness in HARDOX 450 steel, indicating optimal cutting parameters.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of cutting conditions on the surface roughness during thermo-frictional milling with pulse cooling of HARDOX 450 steel. Experimental samples were prepared from HARDOX 450 steel for the research. The experiment planning was carried out using the computer program «Statistica 10». The results of experimental studies showed that HARDOX 450 steel is well-suited for cutting by thermo-frictional milling with pulse cooling, providing surface roughness in the range of Ra = 1.0-7.5 μm, which corresponds to the 5-7 roughness classes. The optimal cutting parameters were determined: n = 2800 rpm; S = 60 mm/min; t = 2 mm. It was established that during thermo-frictional milling with pulse cooling of HARDOX 450 steel, a smooth entry into the material without cooling is required to avoid sharp loads and the friction-induced deflection of the milling tool.
