Structural analysis reveals distinct mechanical properties of phenanthrenequinone and chrysene-5,6-dione crystals, indicating their different responses to force.
The mechanical properties of crystals of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (1) and chrysene-5,6-dione (2) were examined. The former shows brittle fracture under external force, while the latter exhibits elastic bending behavior. Structural analysis reveals that the formation of one- or two-dimensional assemblies through supramolecular interactions among molecules plays a crucial role in these mechanical responses.
