Systematic review assesses driving impairment from psychotropic drugs, suggesting some antidepressants may help patients.
Psychiatric disease and its medical treatment can cause challenges regarding road safety. Several studies explored the subject, but the evidence is inconsistent. In this review, a systematic literature search was conducted to assess psychotropics and their driving impairment. The available evidence suggests that antidepressants with affinity for the H1-receptor, benzodiazepines, and first-generation antipsychotics impair driving ability. Patients possibly benefit from treatment with antidepressants concerning driving skills. However, due to inconsistent designs, more studies are needed.
