Observational analysis reveals improved use of cell salvage in peripartum hemorrhage cases, suggesting effectiveness over allogenic transfusions.
( Br J Anaesth . 2024;133(1):86–92. DOI: 10.1016/j.bja.2023.12.014) Peripartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal death worldwide. In Germany, postpartum hemorrhage is considered a loss of more than 500 mL of blood in the case of a vaginal delivery, and a loss of more than 1000 mL after a cesarean delivery (CD). A procedure called cell salvage is recommended by the Association of Anesthetists for a blood loss of more than 500 mL. Overall, cell salvage is considered a safe and effective alternative to the use of an allogenic red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. This study aims to provide data on the use of cell salvage following peripartum hemorrhage.
