Analysis shows polypharmacy impacts quality of life in older adults, suggesting the need for aged care pharmacists.
With the current ageing population in Australia, older people residing in aged care facilities are more prone to developing multiple complex comorbidities requiring a combination of different medications their body may be unable to withstand. As such, they tend to experience these ailments as a result of adverse drug reactions or drug interactions which can lead to hospitalisation and reduced quality of life.1,2 Therefore, polypharmacy can prove to be a significant burden on our healthcare system and consequently our economy. As a result, changes need to be implemented to help relieve this pressure.
