Assessment reveals significant nitrogen fixing variation among 12 Prosopis cineraria provenances, indicating agroforestry potential.
Nitrogen fixing abilities of 12 provenances of Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce collected from arid India between 21038'N to 29055' N latitude, were assessed in 'chillum' jars in green house. Number of nodules, nodule weight, and shoot nitrogen contents varied significantly (P<0.01) among provenances; and Bikaner, Anoopgarh and Bidasar provenances had greater nitrogen fixing abilities as compared to the remaining ones. Wide genetical variation is due to out-crossing nature of this species. Selection of superior provenances can be of great value in agroforestry systems.
