Excavation reveals a residential district from the ancient city of Dinia, suggesting broader urban development.
Bains, carried out by the departmental archeology service of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (2018-2019), has provided new data on the ancient city of Dinia . A portion of the residential district, located a few hundred meters from the monumental district, was occupied for five centuries. This district was founded in the first half of the 1st century. The houses are of light structures (foundations trenches, wooden and raw earth elevations). Then, it expands and reaches its maximum extension during the second half of the 2nd century. The houses are now bricked up. Successive rearrangements then took place until its progressive abandonment from the end of the 3rd century until the 6th century. The layout and evolution of the rooms, as well as the furniture prove that within this habitat various activities and practices developed : a forge, a kitchen, foundation deposits, monetary savings. This excavation makes it possible to extend the limits of the ancient city to this district, as close as possible to the confluence of the Bléone and the Mardaric for an area of up to 15 ha alternating built districts and open areas (gardens, market gardening). Previous hypotheses concerning the urban topography limited the city to the Bourg district (8 to 10 ha) and presented the western sectors as peri-urban districts.
