Semi-structured interviews revealed that AI as a collaborator enhances growth mindset in researchers, suggesting new adaptive learning strategies.
This paper examines the journey of MPhil and PhD researchers toward the acquisition of a growth mindset in their engagements with artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic practice. A semi-structured interview with postgraduate researchers based on the UNESCO AI Competency Framework and drawing on the theory of the Growth Mindset proposed by Dweck was conducted to explore how AI can be used either as a cognitive co-worker or a tool. Researchers who embraced and took up AI as a collaborator were more prone to show more metacognitive understanding, ethical reflection, and resilience- hallmarks of a growth mindset. On the contrary, the passive application of AI did not provide much value in development. The researchers suggest contribution to theoretical knowledge about how AI incorporation in the search can encourage adaptative learning attitudes, sharing the experience of using AIs in the educational process of higher educational institutions.
