The paper reviews rotary joint technology for spacecraft thermal management, suggesting novel solutions involving magnetic fluids.
To address the thermal management requirements of high-dynamic spacecraft in space environments, particularly the flexible connection and rotational dynamic sealing of fluid working media, this paper reviews the current state of typical product cases on the International Space Station and introduces the research progress on lightweight fluid rotary joints. Considering the mission requirements of next-generation complex spacecraft, such as Mars or lunar exploration, we propose a fluid rotary joint technology based on magnetic fluids. The technical solutions for prototype validation products, their core key materials, and the control strategies for their on-orbit applications are discussed. Finally, this paper outlines future ground testing efforts and flight validation plans.
