Analysis reveals improvements in women's employment rates in manufacturing, indicating recovery post-COVID-19.
Evidence from recent employment surveys indicate that there was a distinct worsening of both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the employment situation after 2011-12. The current series of periodic labour force surveys starting from 2017-18 brought out the prevalence of a much higher unemployment rate than what was recorded in the past. That this period covered the economic impact of demonetization in 2016 and the economic lock downs as part of the covid management strategy during much of 2020 and 2021 is generally cited as a factor impacting the employment in this period. Post covid, the employment situation has shown remarkable improvement with the work participation for women recovering significantly. In this note we examine the improvement in women’s employment in manufacturing since 2017-18, both in quantitative and qualitative terms.
