Demonstrates efficiency of birefringence modulation in polymer waveguides, suggesting enhanced optical applications.
The performance of a liquid crystal polymer waveguide-based birefringence modulator is demonstrated. A CO-polymer optical waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure, with RM optical waveguides embedded in both its upper and lower arms, is proposed for analyzing the birefringence modulation performance in RM-embedded CO-polymer waveguides. The fabricated device achieves a high phase retardation efficiency of 0.033 rad/mW and an ultra-low power requirement of 30.7 mW for π-phase retardation. A high birefringence modulation efficiency of 1.35 × 10⁻⁵/°C is achieved in the RM-embedded CO-polymer optical waveguides.
