Case series demonstrates enhanced visualization in underwater endoscopic surgery for superficial carcinoma, suggesting potential benefits.
Background: A clear surgical field is essential for achieving an optimal resection depth in superficial pharyngeal carcinoma. Underwater resection may improve visualization compared to conventional techniques. Methods: From October to December 2024, four patients with laryngopharyngeal lesions underwent underwater endoscopic surgery at our institute. These cases were compared to a control group who received conventional endoscopic treatment. Results: Compared to conventional methods, the underwater endoscopic technique provided enhanced visual clarity without increased incidence of complications. The complete resection rate was equivalent. Conclusion: The preliminary findings of our study indicate suggest a potential benefit between enhanced visualization and improved surgical outcomes. However, to evaluate whether enhanced visualization improves outcomes, a larger study is needed to investigate whether it leads to reduced operative time, improved complete resection rates, and decreased complications.
