Investigation reveals temperature enhances iron oxide leaching in kaolin, suggesting improved purification effectiveness.
The effect of temperature on the purification of Kaolinby leaching with oxalic acid was investigated. The Kaolin sample was mined from Exland-Gashik in Barkin-Ladi Local Government of Plateau State, Middle Belt Nigeria. Preliminary chemical analysisusing X-ray Florescence of the raw kaolin revealed that the sample contained the following oxides;51.740% SiO2, 35.360% Al2O3, 3.330% Fe2O3 and 2.675% TiO2. XRD results revealed that the sample contained61%Kaolinite, 14% Quartzite, 9% muscovite and 16% Orthoclase mineral phases. The effect ofreaction temperature on iron oxide leaching was studied at 5, 40, 55, 70, 85oC. It was determined that the percentage of iron oxide leaching increased with the leaching temperature up to 70oC. Removing 77.65 % iron oxide left a leached product containing 0.48% Fe2O3 as against the initial 3.33 % Fe2O3, which is potentially suitable for various applications in the ceramics, filler materials in paper, plastic andrubber industries.
