This review highlights risk factors and treatment outcomes for cerebral venous thrombosis in adults, suggesting an algorithm for management.
Cerebral venous thrombosis accounts for 0.5% to 3% of all strokes. Cerebral venous thrombosis is somewhat more common in young people. The clinical presentation of cerebral venous thrombosis is diverse (e.g., headaches, seizures, etc.), and the diagnosis requires a high level of knowledge. In general, patients with cerebral venous thrombosis have a favorable outcome. Predisposing factors to cerebral venous thrombosis are identified in the majority of patients with this disease and may be transient or chronic. This review consolidates the current knowledge concerning risk factors, treatment, and outcomes in adults. An algorithm for managing patients with cerebral venous thrombosis is proposed.
