A new method improves diffracted wave impedance prediction in fractured reservoirs, suggesting better exploration outcomes.
The accurate prediction of impedance is of great significance for the exploration and development of fractured carbonate reservoirs. Conventional impedance inversion method mainly focuses on full wave migrated data. How to invert impedance from diffracted wave migrated data is an urgent problem that needs to be solved. We present a new impedance inversion method for diffracted wave with the background constraint of interval velocity impedance. Drawing on the experience of diffracted wave separation, we remove the reflected wave impedance from the full wave impedance to obtain the corresponding diffracted wave impedance. Compared with full wave impedance, the diffracted wave impedance can remove the shielding effect of strong energy reflected event, and has higher accuracy for quantitative prediction of fracture cavities. We consider the strong heterogeneity of fractured reservoirs and introduce interval velocity impedance to constrain the impedance inversion process. The application of field data shows that the proposed method can quantitatively predict the diffracted wave impedance caused by fracture cavities, which has reference significance for the actual production of fractured carbonate reservoirs.
