Study uncovers surface chemistry changes in diamond nanoparticles after thermal treatment, suggesting new modifications.
The structure and hybridized forms of carbon of primary particles of diamond nanopowders produced by grinding a natural diamond and detonation synthesis with subsequent modifying thermal treatment have been studied by solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Differences in the composition of non-diamond carbon of the shell surrounding the diamond core of natural and synthetic nanodiamonds before and after the thermal treatment were revealed; its prospects for controlling the surface chemistry of nanodiamonds are shown.
