Observational analysis assesses treatment outcomes in 13 patients with esophageal cancer invading aorta, suggesting potential for improved survival.
Background Combined resection of aorta is a challenging treatment for cT4 esophageal cancer (EC) due to its high morbidity and the lack of evidence regarding long-term outcomes. Methods A total of 13 patients with EC invading aorta who underwent combined organ resection after induction treatments between 2003 and 2023 in our institute were included. Short- and long-term outcomes were assessed, and we will present cases of combined resection of aorta. Results Median age was 65 (52–78). Tumor status was primary disease,in 10 patietns (76.9%) and recurrent disease, in 3 patients (23.0%) respectively. All patients underwent chemotherapy and/or chemoradiotherapy as prior induction treatments and achieved R0 resection. Overall complication rate (Clavien–Dindo ≥ grade II) was 61.5%, and in-hospital mortality was 0%. Of the patients who died, 6 patients were attributed to EC, whereas 1 patient died of other causes. Median disease-free and overall survival (OS) were 10,1 and 23.9 months, respectively. Conclusion Combined organ resection may be a feasible and promissing option as a part of the multidisciplinary treatment of EC invading aorta if patient selection is optimizid.
