Cognitive diagnostic modeling reveals pathways to improve conceptual understanding of friction force in high school students.
Enhancing students’ conceptual understanding is one of the primary goals of science education. Existing literature suggests that the degree of knowledge integration among students can reflect their level of conceptual understanding. This study focuses on the concept of friction force, constructing a cognitive structure model of friction force to depict the cognitive structure features of students with different levels of conceptual understanding. Additionally, a cognitive diagnostic test tool for friction force was developed. Based on this tool, 827 Chinese high school students were tested. The results demonstrate that the cognitive structure model of friction force is reasonable and can effectively characterize the knowledge structures of students with varying levels of conceptual understanding. Furthermore, analysis revealed multiple viable pathways for cognitive development. Based on empirical data, we identified the progression pathway optimally aligned with students’ cognitive schemata. The findings of this study provide a novel approach for mapping the cognitive development process of students and offer valuable information for personalized instructional guidance.
