Analysis shows real GDP positively affects food security in Sudan, indicating macroeconomic stability is essential.
Sudan suffers from serious food insecurity and a failure to achieve food and nutrition security, this is despite a vast and diverse agricultural resource. The study aims to analyze the relationship between selected macroeconomic variables and food security in Sudan using time series data from 1970–2020. The vector autoregressive (VAR) approach is used as methodology for the study. The most important results of this study show that the real GDP exerts a positive impact on food security. Exchange rate and government expenditure show a negative impact on food security. The result of climate change and food security show that when rainfall increases, the food security situation improves as a result of increased food agricultural production. The study recommended that, a good policy should be designed to increase real GDP and stabilize the exchange rate.
