Experimental filmmaking explores oral traditions of Scotland's travelling folks, suggesting new insights through archival interventions.
The Force (2024) retrieves and revalues ‘subjugated knowledges’ of Scotland’s travelling folks through critical archival interventions, place-based approaches, experimental filmmaking and literary practices. My video uses temporally disparate home movies, interweaving and upending damaged travelogue film fragments with intimate family life. It contains poetry excerpts and quotations, and other fragments of found footage and sound. I work with the vast institutional archives amassed in Scotland of the travelling peoples’ oral traditions, repurposing these audio archives alongside my own field recordings made at ancient campgrounds.
