Retrospective case series reports positive visual outcomes in uveitic cataract surgery using biologics, highlighting their role in managing ocular inflammation.
This is a retrospective case series of eight eyes of six patients with chronic anterior uveitis with complicated cataract who underwent uveitic cataract surgery with biologics. Three patients had HLA-B27-positive ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and three had seronegative juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). All six patients were on steroids and/or immunosuppressive therapy and biologics, such as adalimumab, infliximab, or etanercept, for control of intraocular inflammation before surgery. The average duration between the surgical intervention and the last dose of biologics was nine days. We found that biologics aided in controlling ocular inflammation, thus achieving good visual outcomes following complicated cataract surgery in patients with AS and JIA.
