This study demonstrates enhanced lateral resistance in precast RC columns using energy dissipation systems, suggesting improved safety during earthquakes.
This paper introduces an innovative multilevel seismic resistance system designed for self‐centering (SC) reinforced concrete (RC) precast bridge columns. The system integrates a typical precast SC bridge column with multiple energy dissipation (multi‐ED) systems to enhance lateral resistance and withstand the adverse effects of massive earthquake action. The study includes a parametric investigation of two different order configurations for the multi‐ED systems (parallel order and sequential order) and two distinct types of ED systems (internal mild steel bars and precast RC‐ED units). A comprehensive 3D finite element model of experimentally tested precast bridge columns was developed to assess the performance of the proposed system. The results demonstrate that the use of sequential multi‐ED systems provides lateral resistance comparable to conventional RC bridge columns without compromising the remaining displacement of the SC precast segmental column systems. Additionally, the implementation of multi‐ED systems significantly increases damping energy by 60% compared to the use of a single damping system, while ensuring that the remaining displacement remains within permissible limits (1%).
