Randomized controlled trial shows Asthishrinkhala Ghrita improves bone mineral density and symptoms in osteoporosis patients, indicating its effectiveness compared to Guduchi Ghrita.
Osteoporosis, described as Asthi-Majja Kshaya in Ayurveda, is characterized by bone demineralization and structural fragility. The study investigates the efficacy of Asthishrinkhala Ghrita Matra Basti and Guduchi Ghrita Matra Basti in improving bone mineral density and clinical symptoms in Asthimajjagata Vata. Methods: 122 patients were screened, and 104 completed a 21-day treatment with either Asthishrinkhala or Guduchi Ghrita Matra Basti. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups (n=52 each). Pre- and post-treatment evaluations were done for subjective symptoms and objective parameters (T-score by BMD, serum calcium, hemoglobin). Data were collected on the 1st, 21st, and 42nd days. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in symptoms and BMD. Group A (Asthishrinkhala) demonstrated higher improvements in T-score (from -2.18 to -1.5, p<0.0001) and subjective parameters (e.g., 68.42% reduction in pain vs 64.86% in Group B). Conclusion: Asthishrinkhala Ghrita Matra Basti is more effective than Guduchi Ghrita Matra Basti in managing osteoporosis (Asthi-Majja Kshaya), showing superior outcomes in both objective and subjective assessments.
