Purpose This systematic literature review investigates the role of open-source software (OSS) in fostering sustainability within library services in Bangladesh University Libraries. This study aims to examine the current state of library services, identify sustainability challenges and explore the significance of OSS adoption in addressing these challenges. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review approach was used, encompassing comprehensive search strategies and selection criteria to identify relevant literature. This systematic literature review follows the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to ensure a thorough and transparent approach to investigating the sustainability of OSS in university libraries in Bangladesh. The methodology is designed to capture relevant academic studies, institutional reports and other literature sources, focusing on the intersection of OSS and library service sustainability. Findings The findings reveal a growing adoption of OSS in Bangladesh University Libraries, highlighting its positive impact on enhancing service sustainability by mitigating financial constraints and vendor lock-in. However, the review also identifies challenges and barriers to OSS implementation, such as lack of technical expertise and inadequate IT infrastructure. Practical implications Recommendations are proposed to enhance OSS sustainability in Bangladesh University Libraries, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts, capacity-building initiatives and policy support. These strategies aim to overcome identified barriers and ensure the long-term sustainability of library services. Originality/value This review contributes to the discourse on leveraging OSS for advancing library service sustainability, particularly in the context of Bangladesh University Libraries. It provides practical recommendations and outlines avenues for future research to deepen understanding and address emerging issues in OSS sustainability within library contexts.
