Ultrasonic treatment improves chemical properties in sulfur composites, highlighting benefits for production and environment.
The development of technologies using ultrasonic processing has made the problem of examining the properties of end products subjected to such activation urgent. Such treatment is stimulated by the need to produce activated components with properties significantly different from those in the original state. The use of active components makes it possible to obtain a high-quality target product, to carry out many production processes of inorganic synthesis and the construction industry under milder conditions. Sulfur is an important and large-tonnage type of chemical raw material. Its production significantly exceeds consumption. This is due to the production of associated (regenerative) sulfur during the processing of constantly increasing volumes of sulfur-containing hydrocarbon raw materials (gas, oil) and deeper purification of refined products from sulfur. In this regard, large volumes of unclaimed sulfur accumulate at oil and gas processing enterprises, causing serious environmental concerns. As a rule, sulfur is stored in open areas. The advantages of open storage of sulfur are due to the simplicity and efficiency of this method, but must be located at a certain distance from residential areas. During storage, sulfur oxide (VI) and the smallest particles of sulfate salts can be formed. And under certain conditions (rains, storms) they form "acid precipitates" that destroy forests, disrupt the life of aquatic ecosystems, cause serious violations of animal and human health, especially their respiratory system. On the other hand, valuable specific properties of sulfur - hydrophobicity, bactericidal and binding properties, low toxicity, chemical resistance in acidic media - create good prerequisites for expanding the applications of this product. It seems relevant to obtain materials for a wide purpose based on regenerated sulfur. In order to chemically bind the components and obtain a single integral monolith, activation with ultrasound is proposed.
