Observational analysis highlights salt tolerance in tree species, suggesting implications for agroforestry.
The present paper records the relative salt tolerance of some agroforestry species. Azadirachta indica and Dalbergia latifolia tolerated salts up to 6.5 ds/m at germination stage whereas Leucaena leucocephala and Gmelina arborea appeared sensitive even at 3.5 ds/m level. Based on their growth performance, Prosopis juliflora appeared most salt tolerant among all the tree species studied. Leucaena leucocephala, Acacia nilotica, Azadirachta indica and Prosopis cineraria can grow under high salinity level (6.5 ds/m) with more than 50 per cent reduction in growth whereas Dalbergia sissoo and D. latifolia appeared salt sensitive and withstand salts up to 3.5 ds/m salinity level. Gmelina arborea was found highly salt sensitive and can withstand salinity up to 2.5 ds/m.
