A novel quadrilateral edge element improves waveguide analysis, suppressing spurious solutions while providing accurate results.
A quadrilateral edge element is developed for the vectorial finite element method applied to the analysis of propagation characteristics in an arbitrarily shaped, inhomogeneously loaded waveguide. The finite element formulation is based on the use of the transverse components of the electric or magnetic field. Some typical edge elements are first demonstrated to show the appearance of spurious solutions depending on the shape of the elements. The present quadrilateral element succeeds in suppressing the spurious solutions completely. To show the validity and the usefulness, computed results are illustrated for some dielectric loaded waveguides and ridged waveguides, and are compared with the analytical ones. Very close agreements have been found.
